FAQs about our Family Medicine Residency Program
We do not have minimum score cutoffs, however, preference will be given to applicants who have passed any USMLE or COMLEX exam on one attempt.
In order to be considered for interview, we allow no more than 1 failed attempt on USMLE Step 1.
In order to be considered for ranking, applicants must not have any failed attempts on USMLE Step 2CK, and no failed attempts at USMLE Step 2CS for those with previous USMLE 2CS scores when it was still being administered.
USMLE Step 2 CK scores are not required for interview selection, but must be reported by the rank order list deadline.
We accept ECFMG sponsored J-1 VISAS. We do not sponsor H1A/H1B VISA applicants.
U.S. Clinical Experience in the form of hands-on clinical rotations are required. Observerships, scribe work, research, and medical assistant work does not fall into the category of US clinical experience.
Unfortunately, we do not offer Observerships or research positions.
As a medical school graduate not in a training program, you cannot “moonlight” by working in a physician’s private office or clinic in the state of California.
Graduates unable to gain admission into an accredited training program cannot gain clinical experience by working in a physician’s private office or clinic as a trainee or “physician assistant.”
Graduates can be employed as a medical assistant in a physician’s office as long as they:
-
Do not represent themselves as a medical doctor.
-
Do not exceed the duties specified in B&P Code sections 2069-2071.
-
Do not exceed the duties specified in Title 16, California Code of Regulations, sections 1366-1366.4.
More information on these laws is available from the Medical Board of California. For questions about unlicensed activity, contact the board’s Enforcement Unit by phone at (916) 263-2424.
For international medical school graduates who have never completed an ACGME approved residency, the cutoff date for medical school graduation is 5 years.
We require three (3) Letters of Recommendation dated within the past three years. It is recommended that one of these Letters of Recommendation should be from a family medicine physician who has directly worked with the applicant in a clinical setting, whether outpatient or inpatient.
Currently, we do not have any advanced standing open positions.
FAQs about our Interview and Visit Process
All interviews will be conducted virtually via Zoom. Please review your ERAS interview invitation for further instructions on time, date and virtual interview links.
Upon receiving your virtual interview link, a member of the faculty will join and conduct the interview according to the allotted time slot.
For confidentiality and to reduce bias, all video interviews will NOT be recorded. We also ask that applicants do NOT record their interview sessions.
We are conducting virtual interviews weekly. This is subject to change, specific times will be announced soon.
Rotating members of our faculty will be interviewing candidates. Expect two (2) interviews from either PD, APD, and/or core faculty.
We anticipate based on technical setup and bandwidth, each interview will last up to 15 minutes.
Yes, as an applicant invited to interview, your invitation has dates for a virtual Meet and Greet in which you're able to partake. Please email Residency Coordinator Marisol Gonzalez if you have additional questions.
If you are disconnected while on an interview or are unable to login, please contact Residency Program Coordinator Marisol as soon as possible at (559) 450-5370. Otherwise, you'll need to restart your browser and re-click the Zoom invite link that you received.
Unfortunately, at this time we cannot support physical tours.
You are able to amend your interview date up to 24 hours prior to your scheduled interview time/date on Thalamus. Please email Residency Program Coordinator Marisol with additional questions or assistance.
