Welcome to Transitional Year

Clifton van Putten, MD, FASA, Program Director, Transitional Year The Transitional Year Residency Program at Saint Agnes Medical Center received Initial Accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) in April 2020 and Continued Accreditation in August of 2022. Our program has grown into a dynamic, vibrant training ground for medical learners. After spending one year with us, our residents have graduated to more than 40 esteemed advanced training institutions across the country, including the University of California, Harvard, Stanford, and New York University.

The Transitional Year Residency Program has been designed to give you not only the core education that is expected from a Transitional Year Program, but also to provide you with specialty elective options to help make sure you are prepared for your next residency program. One of the requirements of the residency is that all residents must take and pass the USMLE step 3 examination, preferably by the Spring Quarter of the residency year. This is because many receiving Advanced Residencies require a "pass" on the USMLE 3 prior to matriculation. There are funds available to defray their cost of that and/or other educational expenses. Our dedicated and enthusiastic faculty are looking forward to mentoring you in your chosen specialty.

Fresno is fairly unique within the state of California as compared to the majority of the population centers on the coast. It is a large city of half a million people—one million in the greater metropolitan area—two hours inland from the Pacific Ocean. One advantage of living in Fresno is that we enjoy a very high quality of life with a low cost of housing relative to the major urban centers; yet we are a two- to three-hour drive from the best California has to offer: Yosemite National Park, lakes, skiing, beaches, urban arts, cuisine and glamour. Fresno's population is diverse, as the county is a melting pot for recent immigrants from Asia and Latin America. As a resident you will gain exposure to a wide range of health conditions and pathologies in the course of your training.

The mission of Saint Agnes Medical Center is to "Serve together in the spirit of the Gospel as a compassionate and transforming healing presence within our communities." We are confident that, should you match with our program, you will see for yourself that Saint Agnes Medical Center and our program uphold this ideal.

Thank you for your interest in the Transitional Year Residency program at Saint Agnes Medical Center.
