Simple ways to care for yourself

Between work, family and caring for others, it can be easy to put your own needs last. But you deserve time to rest, support when things feel heavy and moments that bring you peace. Rooted in our Catholic tradition, Saint Agnes Health cares for the whole person—body, mind and spirit. Whatever your faith or beliefs, caring for yourself can begin with small, everyday actions.

You don’t have to do everything on this list. Start with one thing that feels possible today.

Care for your body

Make room for the everyday needs that can get overlooked when life is busy.

  • Keep your own health appointments. Your health deserves attention, too. If you’ve been putting off a visit, take a moment to schedule it. Ask someone to help with other responsibilities while you’re away.
  • Make time to eat and drink water. Keep a water bottle nearby and plan for simple meals or snacks, especially on days when you’re busy caring for someone else.
  • Move in a way that works for you. Take a short walk, stretch gently or choose another activity that fits your abilities. Give yourself permission to start small.
  • Make room for rest. Leave a task for tomorrow when you can, take a quiet break or ask someone you trust to step in while you rest.

Care for your mind

You don’t have to carry every responsibility or feeling on your own.

  • Pause between tasks. Before moving to the next thing on your list, give yourself a moment to sit quietly, look outside or simply take a breath.
  • Talk with someone you trust. Call a friend or family member and share how you’re doing. It’s OK to say, “I don’t need you to fix anything. I just need someone to listen.”
  • Ask for specific help. Let someone know what would make your day easier, whether that’s picking up groceries, bringing a meal or helping with an errand.
  • Make space for something you enjoy. Listen to music, read a few pages or spend time on a favorite hobby. You don’t have to finish every chore before taking a moment for yourself.

Care for your spirit

Make time for what helps you feel connected, comforted and hopeful.

  • Take a quiet moment for prayer or reflection. Share what’s on your heart with God, meditate or sit in silence. You don’t need the perfect words—or any words at all.
  • Turn to words that bring comfort. Read a Scripture passage, prayer or meaningful reflection. Give yourself time to consider what it means to you today.
  • Notice a moment of goodness. A kind gesture, a shared laugh or time outdoors may offer something to appreciate. Gratitude can have a place alongside worry or sadness.
  • Connect with others. Reach out to your faith community, a spiritual leader or someone who helps you feel supported. You can ask for prayer, conversation or simply company.
Care for spirit
Some days will leave more room for self-care than others. Choose what fits your needs today, and let others help when they can. Your well-being matters, whether you’re caring for a loved one or simply trying to manage a full day.
