Saint Agnes physician first in the Valley to use Shoulder iD™
October 20, 2025
Saint Agnes Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Kimberly Grannis, is the first physician in the Central Valley to perform minimally invasive shoulder replacement surgery using the Shoulder iD™ Primary Reversed Glenoid from Stryker.
The personalized implant is manufactured using each patient’s individual anatomy as a blueprint, creating a unique solution to relieve pain and restore shoulder mobility for those experiencing arthritis and rotator cuff injuries.
Shoulder iD™ enables surgeons to visualize, plan and order a custom glenoid implant for each patient using Stryker’s Blueprint technology – an advanced surgical planning software that allows surgeons to visualize a 3D model crafted from the patient’s CT scan to virtually plan the shoulder replacement surgery. Once planned, the surgeon will order a regulatory compliant, patient-matched Shoulder iD™ implant and any specific instrumentation needed for the procedure.
“For patients experiencing severe shoulder pain, the personalization available with Shoulder iD™ allows for a more precise replacement, leading to improved pain relief and mobility compared to a standard implant,” says Dr. Kimberly Grannis, Saint Agnes Orthopedic Surgeon.
Unlike a traditional shoulder prothesis, the Shoulder iD™ is a reverse prothesis, swapping the natural placement of the ball and socket. The ball of the joint is implanted in the scapula, and the socket is placed at the end of arm bone (humerus). The patient-specific nature of the implant helps to preserve as much bone as possible for patients with complex arthritis and deformity.
This method is particularly successful at reducing or eliminating pain for patients with rotator cuff injuries. A traditional replacement relies on the shoulder muscles and tendons being intact, which can leave patients with pain and limited mobility even after surgery. A reverse glenoid procedure allows patients to use their deltoid to raise their arm instead of their rotator cuff.
“The goal of shoulder replacement is to get patients back to enjoying daily life and physical activity without pain and the Shoulder iD™ offers a more effective solution,” says Dr. Grannis.
