This weekend, we celebrate the independence of our country and our birth as a free nation. Each year, Independence Day is an important reminder of the sacrifices it took to create the foundations of the United States we call home today. As we head into the holiday weekend, be sure these safety tips are on your list of celebration essentials.

COVID-19

Though California has reduced many of its COVID-19 restrictions, with the emergence of new variants and only about half of Fresno County residents partially or fully vaccinated, it’s still important take precautions when in large groups to keep yourself and your loved ones safe.

Heat

With temperatures expected to top 100 degrees throughout the weekend, be sure to keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of water or low-calorie beverages throughout the day. To reduce your chances of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, be sure you have access to air-conditioned spaces, shade, swimming pools or lakes to take a break from the hot temps.

Fireworks

Watching fireworks light up the night sky on the 4th of July is a holiday staple, but with extremely dry conditions and hot temperatures this year, that beautiful display can be a major fire hazard. To keep your family safe, find a free professional firework show around town and bring some blankets to enjoy a safe and hassle-free display. If you just can’t go without fireworks at home, be sure to only use California-approved fireworks and set up your display away from children and any flammable substances. Have a hose or buckets of water on hand in case you need to put out any stray sparks.
