A colonoscopy could save your life

The recent death of actress Kirstie Alley – from what her children say was a short battle with colon cancer – is an important reminder to all of us about the importance of getting screened regularly.
Colon cancer is the third-most common cancer in the United States, but what sets it apart from other cancers is that most people with colon cancer may not have any symptoms. "Because we can’t rely on symptoms to notify us about potential colon cancer, it’s recommended that all people – men and women – start colonoscopy screenings at age 45," says Dr. James Bruce, Saint Agnes Colon Rectal Surgeon.
Colonoscopy is the gold standard for colon cancer screening. During the exam, a doctor checks the entire colon and rectum for polyps and cancer by inserting a thin, flexible, lighted tube.
"Most colon cancer begins as benign polyps,” Dr. Bruce says. “During a colonoscopy, we’re able to remove those polyps before they can develop into cancer."
Dr. Bruce also notes that even though bowel prep for a colonoscopy isn’t very glamorous, the results are far more accurate than popular at-home colon screening tests at catching cancerous or pre-cancerous polyps, which is why he recommends colonoscopy screenings to one-hundred percent of his patients.
"Think of a colonoscopy like an oil change," Dr. Bruce says. "Your body – just like your car – needs the occasional tune-up to keep it running right."
