Turning 40 is a big milestone with a lot to look forward to. But one thing you might not be as excited about is your first mammogram.

While the idea can cause some anxiety, mammograms are the most effective tool for detecting breast cancer early — when it’s easiest to treat. Knowing what to expect can help ease your nerves and make your first experience a little more comfortable.

How to prepare for your mammogram

Follow the tips to help your appointment go smoothly:

  • Schedule wisely. If you still have a menstrual cycle, try to schedule your mammogram for the week after your period, when your breasts are less tender.
  • Skip deodorants and lotions. On the day of your exam, avoid applying deodorant, powder, perfume, lotion, or ointment to your chest or underarms. These can interfere with the X-ray image and cause false readings.
  • Wear a two-piece outfit. You'll only need to remove your top for the exam, so wear something that’s easy to change out of. Your technologist will provide a gown or robe.
  • Leave large jewelry at home. Long necklaces or large earrings can interfere with imaging, so it’s best to take them off before your visit.

How long does a mammogram take?

Most mammogram appointments take about 30 minutes. If you have breast implants, your visit may take a bit longer.

After checking in, you’ll change into a gown in a private area. Your technologist may ask a few questions about your medical history — like whether you’ve had any prior breast surgeries or biopsies — to ensure accurate imaging.

During the scan, your technologist will gently position one breast at a time on the machine. Each breast is compressed for about 20–30 seconds per view to capture clear images. A few images will be taken of each breast.

Your results will be available in MyChart, and a letter will also be mailed to your home.

Are mammograms painful?

Most people find the pressure during compression slightly uncomfortable, but it shouldn’t be painful. Everyone’s experience is different, depending on breast sensitivity and size.

If you feel pain, let your technologist know — they can make adjustments to help improve your comfort.
