Vascular disease is the general term for a variety of problems affecting the blood flow through the body's blood vessels. The causes of arterial diseases or problems are wide-ranging, but most vascular disease result from atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). Other causes of problems of the arteries include congenital malformation, trauma, and diseases of the arteries.
Vascular surgeons are general surgeons with specialized training in the diagnosis and management of carotid artery disease, aortic aneurysm, peripheral artery disease, and other obstructive arterial diseases that may involve the organs located in the abdomen.
