In Fresno alone, an estimated 3,500 homeless people are living unsheltered. That number does not include the community's 10,500 sheltered homeless - individuals sleeping in places not their own, or in cars, garages or other places not suitable for housing. Saint Agnes is among several partner agencies to support a new communitywide initiative to prevent and end homelessness - Fresno First Steps Home.
In 2010, Saint Agnes pledged $250,000 over three years to help implement Fresno's 10-year plan to end chronic homelessness. Fresno First Steps Home will coordinate a "housing-first" model that is aimed at connecting participants with an umbrella of services, including substance abuse prevention and mental health programs, health care benefits acquisition and medical treatment.
