This course covers current trends and updates in Fetal Monitoring. It is intended to enhance the skills of clinicians and/or prepare them for the NCC Fetal Monitoring Certification exam, as well as provide continuing education for renewal of NCC Certification.

Course Content

  • Physiologic Basis for Fetal Monitoring (Uteroplacental Exchange, Fetal Oxygenation, Fetal Response to Hypoxemia, FHR Regulation).
  • FHR Patterns, Clinical Implications, Management (Evidence and Consensus-Based Practice, Normal vs. Abnormal Fetal Acid Base Status, Categories, In-Utero Resuscitation, Uterine Tachysystole, Management of Category II Tracings)
  • FHR and Umbilical Cord Gases (Respiratory, Metabolic, Mixed Acidemia)
  • Additional Considerations and Case Studies (Ruptured Vasa Previa, FMH, Abruptio Placenta, Uterine Rupture, 2nd Stage Pushing, Fetal Arrhythmias)
  • Adjunct Fetal Assessment (FMC, NST, Biophysical Profile, CST, Doppler Studies)

Nancy O’Brien-Abel, MN, RNC
Nancy is a perinatal clinical nurse specialist with over 30 years of experience in caring for women with normal and complicated pregnancies. As a Clinical Instructor at the University of Washington School of Nursing (1987-present) and former Teaching Associate in OB/GYN at the UW Medical School (1992-2012), she has actively focused on multi-disciplinary education and collaboration.

Nancy is a nationally recognized speaker and consultant on fetal monitoring and patient safety. She has authored chapters in AWHONN’s Fetal Heart Monitoring Principles and Practice, 2009/2014, (Physiologic Basis of Fetal Monitoring and FHR Interpretation) and in AWHONN’s Perinatal Nursing, 2013, (Labor and Birth and Fetal Assessment During Labor). She received her Master of Nursing from the Perinatal CNS Program, UW. She is NCC certified and serves as an Instructor for AWHONN’s Fetal Heart Monitoring Program.
