THERAPEUTIC MUSIC LAB

Yamaha Clavinova keyboard used in the Therapeutic Music Lab.

An exciting new service offered by the Humor and Music program is the Therapeutic Music Lab on 2-Main.

Created in partnership with the Yamaha Music and Wellness Institute, Inc., the Therapeutic Music Lab features Yamaha Clavinova pianos – specialized digital pianos that allow individuals with limited physical capabilities, no musical knowledge and no prior training to experience the joy of creating music.

Saint Agnes is one of only two medical centers in the United States using this innovative technology.

During the debut of the new Therapeutic Music Lab, a facilitator explains how to use the Yamaha keyboards.

During the 45- to 60-minute sessions, a trained facilitator leads four participants – each person at his or her own piano – through a series of breathing exercises, interactive drum rhythms and melodic improvisations.

Exercises can also be tailored specifically to a patient's medical conditions. What may be best for a heart attack survivor may be completely different for a patient facing respiratory issues.

Recognizing the day-to-day stresses in a work environment, Saint Agnes has also opened the program to its employees. Outpatients who come to the program are referred by their physician or other sources.
