Our Services

The Medical Center's Laboratory is a full-service, 24-hour clinical and pathological laboratory, whose work is essential to the quality health care that Saint Agnes staff and physicians provide. Many illnesses could not be fully diagnosed without the critical information that laboratory testing can offer.

Reasons to Insist on Saint Agnes

Laboratory testing is an important part of the healthcare diagnosis and treatment that you receive from your personal physician. We have the latest equipment utilizing automation for cost-effective performance and our experienced staff provides efficient, accurate and reliable laboratory services.

  • Physicians can schedule your laboratory visits and phone in orders directly to our Centralized Scheduling Department at (559) 450-5656. Your orders will be processed upon your arrival at our Outpatient Center.
  • Courier service is available to pick up specimens in the Fresno/Clovis area for testing, if your physician draws your blood in his/her office.
  • A comprehensive menu of testing is available in all areas of the laboratory.
  • Laboratory instruments are interfaced with the laboratory computer system.
This means that test results are transmitted to the hospital computer system as soon as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist releases the results. This computer technology significantly reduces the time required for results to be available to your physician.
  • Physicians access our computer system from the convenience of their office through clinical systems, such as My Saint Agnes and the H-Patient Folder (HPF), allowing them to view laboratory patient results rather than utilizing the telephone or waiting for a hard copy report.
  • Test results can be sent via FAX to physician offices upon request.

Accreditation

Saint Agnes Medical Center Laboratory is licensed by the State of California, accredited from the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).

The laboratory is directed by Clinical Pathology and Anatomic Pathology certified pathologists, headed by Laboratory Medical Director Tai-Po Tschang, M.D. Our pathologists have subspecialty certification such as Dermatopathology, Hematopathology, Blood Banking and Cytopathology. The pathologists are available for clinical and anatomic consultations, including bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, and fine needle aspiration biopsies.

Saint Agnes laboratory was awarded an accreditation by the Commission on Laboratory Accreditation of the College of American Pathologists (CAP), based on the results of a recent on-site inspection. The laboratory's director was advised of this national recognition and congratulated for the excellence of the services being provided.

The Saint Agnes Laboratory is one of more than 6,000 CAP-accredited laboratories nationwide. During the accreditation process, inspectors examine the laboratory's records and quality control procedures for the preceding two years. CAP inspectors also examine the entire staff's qualifications, lab equipment, facilities, safety program and record, as well as its overall management. This stringent inspection program is designed to specifically ensure the highest standard of care for the laboratory's patients.

Outpatient Laboratory

Our expanded Outpatient Laboratory, located on the first floor adjacent to Outpatient Registration, has grown from 7 to 12 semi-private blood draw stations and features a spacious waiting room with a children's play area. With these additional features, plus 20 new outpatient registration offices – 14 more than we had before – patients can look forward to reduced wait times and an even better care experience. The Saint Agnes Laboratory provides a highly automated testing environment with state-of-the-art equipment and instrumentation to achieve the most accurate and reliable results as quickly as possible. While many outpatient labs send specimens out of town to be tested, Saint Agnes performs its testing onsite, expediting turnaround times for our patients and physicians. Last year our highly skilled staff served more than 300,000 patients and performed more than two million tests!

The Outpatient Center at Saint Agnes is open Monday through Friday 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 6 a.m. to 12 noon.  Free valet parking and wheelchair assistance is available Monday - Friday, 5:30 a.m.-7 p.m.

State-of-the-art Technology Means Faster Biopsy Results

Getting results back from a biopsy can mean several days of waiting and stress for patients. But thanks to a new automated tissue processor available at Saint Agnes, results of small biopsies will be ready one day sooner.

Saint Agnes was the first Valley hospital to introduce a new state-of-the-art microwave tissue processing system, the Sakura Tissue-Tex Xpress. Unlike traditional specimen processing, the Tissue-Tex Xpress is a high capacity, rapid processing automated tissue processor that allows specimens to be loaded continuously – handling up to 120 specimens per hour.

With traditional overnight processing, which has been the standard for the past 60 years, it typically takes three days to get the results of a tissue biopsy back to the surgeon. For example, a biopsy taken Monday would be processed Monday night, pathologic diagnosis made on Tuesday, and results would be in the hands of the referring physician by Wednesday. Using the automated microwave tissue processor, the results will be ready for the referring physician the next working day.

This innovative system functions similarly to the microwave you use in your kitchen. Rather than heating the tissue, the microwaves enhance dehydration – making moisture easier to extract. However, unlike a domestic microwave oven, the Tissue-Tex Xpress operates continuously at low power to ensure that tissues are processed gently and evenly, avoiding the risk of overheating that could damage the tissue.

The microwave processor is designed for small tissue biopsies like core biopsies of the breast, lung and prostate; endoscopic biopsies of the GI tract; and small skin biopsies. Larger, fattier tissues will continue to be processed using the traditional method.
