VOLUNTEERING

Volunteers are a very important part of the Saint Agnes team and are deeply appreciated by the staff and physicians they support! By donating a few hours every other week, you can make a positive difference for the Medical Center and it's patients.

With the demands of modern medicine, doctors and nurses can't always provide the extra comfort and attention that patients and their families may need. Saint Agnes volunteers can provide that "personal touch" and assist the hospital staff in a hundred different ways. In return, our volunteers enjoy the deep satisfaction that comes from helping those in need –  making new friends and expanding job skills along the way.

Our volunteer program was born in November 1953 when four friends got together over a game of bridge and began discussing ways they could help the then Saint Agnes Hospital. Before the game concluded, the Saint Agnes Service Guild was born. Within four months, 35 charter members were recruited and the Guild held its first fundraiser, donating $400 to benefit the hospital's new maternity wing.

As our needs have expanded, the program has evolved as well. Today, nearly 1,000 men, women, and teens (ages 14 to 17) volunteer in nearly every department of the Medical Center. We are always eager to bring dedicated individuals into our volunteer program. After attending one of our regularly scheduled orientations, volunteers are trained within the service area of their choice.

Saint Agnes honors its first 50-year vounteer

When Dolores Allan started vounteering at Saint Agnes Hospital in 1959, the world was a different place. Dwight Eisenhower and Richard Nixon were President and Vice-President. A car cost $2,000 and a house under $20,000. Gasoline was 30 cents a gallon, the minimum wage was a dollar an hour, and Alaska and Hawaii were admitted to the Union as the 49th and 50th states. And now five decades later, Dolores has the distinction of being the Medical Center's first 50-year volunteer.

Dolores' early years of volunteering began with the Shopping Cart and later evolved into her role of bookkeeping for the Gift Shop. In the beginning, Dolores worked a few hours a week on the books. Once the shop's daily income exceeded the weekly income, her duties became a few hours a day. Eventually, a few hours commitment mushroomed into 32,000 hours of service.

Dolores officially retired from her volunteer bookkeeping services in January 2009. Because of her combination of civic, community and hospital service, she was recognized in 1994 as the Fresno County Volunteer of the YearTo Dolores and all of our Service Guild Members, we say "thank you" for your many years of supporting the Saint Agnes healing mission.
