BONE DENSITY SCANNING

Osteoporosis is a growing health concern among men and women worldwide. But it is also one of the most preventable diseases today. That’s why, Saint Agnes has invested in the most advanced bone densitometry system available – the Discovery from Hologic.

Osteoporosis is a potentially crippling disease that affects over 75 million people worldwide. Each year over one million people have a hip fracture, which can devastate a person's ability to walk unassisted, and in 50 percent of the cases a person may never regain their independence. Statistics show that 1 in 2 women and 1 in 4 men are at risk for fracture or have at least one spinal fracture and don't know it. Caucasian and Asian women are at a greater risk than African American and Hispanic women of developing osteoporosis. Identifying and treating patients at risk of fracture, but who have not yet sustained a fracture, will substantially reduce the long-term burden of osteoporosis.

The Hologic Discovery system is used to detect bone thinning in even its early stages, and for those who have already developed osteoporosis, it can indicate how quickly the disease is developing.

Considered the standard for measuring bone mineral density, bone density scanning uses a very small dose of radiation, and is quick and painless. Unlike many providers who offer bone scanning, Saint Agnes has a team of specially accredited radiologists who read the bone scans to ensure the most accurate results possible.

Bone density scans show the difference between a healthy hip and one with osteoporosis. Note the extreme thinning of the bone at the joint of the osteoporotic hip.
